MADISON, Wis. -

A University of Wisconsin-Madison police officer was injured when his motorcycle was struck by an SUV, police said.

UW police spokesman Marc Lovicott said the accident happened at the intersection of Regent and Charter streets at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police said the UW officer was headed eastbound on Regent Street to meet the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles football team and escort them to Camp Randall for the game against the Badgers.

A woman driving northbound on Charter Street T-boned the officer's motorcycle, Lovicott said.

He said the officer flew over the handlebars and hood of the bike and landed on his head.

"We're lucky that he's OK, he's doing well," Lovicott said. He added that the helmet the officer was wearing prevented any serious head injuries.

Lovicott said the City of Madison Police Department cited the driver of the SUV in connection with the accident, though he did not know the charge.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for injuries to his right side and has been released.
