USDA report says crops need more rain

Published On: Aug 19 2013 04:46:46 PM CDT
MILWAUKEE -

Wisconsin farmers are struggling with a lack of heat and rain.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that the state is in its fourth week of below average temperatures and has had little rain.

The USDA's weekly report says on average soil moisture is 59 percent short. That's just a little bit better than where the state stood this time last year, when Wisconsin and the nation were struggling with drought. Then, average soil moisture in Wisconsin was 62 percent short.

The USDA says corn and soybeans are showing stress from a lack of moisture, particularly in northern Wisconsin.

The agency says precipitation totals for the past week ranged from 0.01 inches in Green Bay to 1.15 inches in Milwaukee.
