A transgender teen was crowned homecoming queen Friday night at a high school in Southern California, but not without some controversy.

Cassidy Lynn Campbell, born Lance Campbell, cried tears of joy when she won the title at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, becoming the first transgender homecoming queen in the school's history.

"I realized that it wasn't for me anymore and I was doing this for so many other people all around, not just the county, and not just the state, but the nation and possibly even the world," Cassidy told Los Angeles TV station KTLA. "So I am so proud to win this, not just for me but for everyone out there."

The 16-year-old has been living as a woman the past three years.

Her win was not without some controversy, and negative comments from some students.

But she and Principal Paul Morrow are proud of the way the majority voted.

"We're proud of the message from home of the Vikings has been one of equity, acceptance, tolerance and respect," Morrow said.
