Throngs of believers are flocking to a home in northern Israel to see a statue of the Virgin Mary that some say is weeping oil.

Members of a Christian family in Tarshiha are calling the statue a miracle, according to The Associated Press.

Osama Khoury told the AP his family bought the statue last year but only recently did his wife recently find it "covered with oil."

"She then wiped the oil, she was scared," Khoury said. "She called our neighbor and told her to come and see what she saw. The neighbor came and looked at it and found that it was real oil, and then she held my wife's hands and told her not to be afraid, that it was a blessing that had come into your house."

Khoury's wife, Amira, said the statue also "spoke" to her and told her not to be afraid.

Thousands of people have visited their home in recent weeks to see the statue, which appears to be slick with moisture even when wiped off.
