State to extend unemployment benefits

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development announced Wednesday it has received approval to extend unemployment benefits. Beginning May 12, the third tier of the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) will be available to those who have exhausted their state unemployment benefits or tier-two EUC benefits.

According to the DWD, tier three had been closed to the recently unemployed since February. The new extension would extend the maximum eligibility in Wisconsin from 54 weeks to 63 weeks.  Tier-three benefits have also been extended to new participants as well.

Wisconsin became eligible for the extended benefits after three months of 7 percent unemployment. According the DWD, Wisconsin is among 29 other states with this extension. But Wisconsin is above the national average for unemployment.

According to the DWD website, new participants will have until Dec. 21 to establish eligibility for federal benefits for any of the three tiers. Due to cuts from the federal sequestration, weekly EUC benefit rates and maximum benefit amounts have been reduced 10.7 percent.
