Six people were killed Sunday in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wis.

OAK CREEK, Wis. -

Officials at a Milwaukee-area Sikh temple where six people were killed last year say they aimed for fairness when they distributed the $1.1 million in donations that poured in from around the world.

The victims included a 41-year-old woman who was her family's primary breadwinner, and an 84-year-old man who retired decades ago. That raised questions about whether each family deserved equal compensation.

In the end, temple members agreed not to place values on life. Each of the victims' families got equal shares of more than $125,000.

Some of the families relocated from India after the shooting, and they've used the money for food, rent and other essentials.

Families of the wounded got lesser amounts.

Monday is the one-year anniversary of the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
