SCANDIA, Minn. -

A Minnesota sheriff's commander is out of the hospital after he was shot while scouting a turkey-hunting spot in Wisconsin.

Cmdr. Jerry Cusick of the Washington County sheriff's office was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul Tuesday after receiving a shotgun blast to the head, neck and shoulder.

Cusick told the St. Paul Pioneer Press more than 50 pellets pierced his skin and will not be removed. He will have to have surgery for a pellet lodged behind one of his eyes.

Authorities said Cusick was unarmed when a turkey hunter mistook him for a turkey and shot him in the town of Somerset, Wis.

Cusick said he still hopes to hunt this season and plans to go back to work next week.

The shooting remains under investigation.
