Republicans gather for state convention

ROTHSCHILD, Wis. -

Wisconsin Republican Party chairman Brad Courtney said he understands why many were disappointed following the 2012 election, but he said the GOP will be "fighting tooth and nail" to make gains next year.

Courtney spoke Saturday at the state party convention near Wausau.

He reflected on the past year that saw Gov. Scott Walker win his recall election and Republicans increase their majorities in the state Senate and Assembly. But Democrat Tammy Baldwin won the U.S. Senate race and President Barack Obama carried Wisconsin.

Courtney said Republicans "are not resting on our laurels" and instead are organizing to prepare for Walker's re-election campaign and other races next year.

Walker, Rep. Paul Ryan and Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus are among those scheduled to speak Saturday.
