MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man was arrested Friday after allegedly hitting a traffic signal, and being shot with a Taser by police for saying he could beat them up and refusing to be placed in handcuffs, according to a release.

Officials said they responded around 5:15 a.m. to a hit-and-run accident near Highway 51 and Highway 30 in the northbound lanes.

Officials said they found a downed traffic signal at the intersection and located the vehicle of Thomas D. Bradford Sr., 36, of Madison, near a gas station north of the accident.

The vehicle’s airbags were deployed and it had deflated tires, according to the release.

Officials said they found Bradford at his residence and smelled a strong odor of alcohol.

Bradford was resistant to taking a Breathalyzer test and told police they would have to fight him, according to the release.

Officials said Bradford told them he could choke and beat them, and that they were no match for him.

Bradford repeatedly told officers that they needed to get ready for a fight with him and when he refused to be placed in handcuffs officers used a Taser on him, according to the release.

Officials said Bradford cooperated after being shot with a Taser.

Bradford was arrested on charges operating while intoxicated fourth offense, operating with a prohibited concentration fourth offense, knowingly operating while suspended – causing property damage, and failure to notify police of an accident.
