Police said the man who stabbed a family in the apartment next to him Friday suffered from mental health issues, and died Friday night.

The Madison Police Department released details about the double murder and attempted murder that took place at a Madison apartment building.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said the suspected attacker, a man in his 30s who lived in an apartment on the 2600 block of East Washington Avenue had made previous threats to his neighbors. The motive for the stabbing is still being investigated but police said the suspect had mental health issues.

Police said the stabbings happened just before 1 p.m. during an apparent dispute between neighbors. One victim with stab wounds had fled the apartment; one woman was found dead inside and another woman was rushed to the hospital but died Friday.

DeSpain said Saturday that the surviving victim is a 16-year-old boy who lived with his mother in the apartment. His mother, in her 50s, was the victim found dead at the scene. A 4-year-old boy found hiding in the apartment was not related to the family but was brought to the apartment by his babysitter, a woman in her 30s, who was the daughter of the first victim and brother to the surviving teen.

The 4-year-old was not physically injured, police said.

The suspect had forced his way into the victims' apartment and attacked the family, according to the report. The injured teen was able to flee and summon help. The teen suffered multiple stab wounds, was reported in stable condition Saturday and is expected to survive.

Police responding to the report of the stabbing arrived to find the suspect with a knife. At least one officer shot the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died Friday night.
