New Year 2014 - Of Memory And Promise

The bittersweet emotions of New Year’s Eve are the result of that confluence of reflection on another year entrusted to the annals of history and the wonder of the unknown ahead of us. Both are so deeply human and powerful that we allow them to mark the passage of our lives.

The hardest part is of course the sense of loss; of opportunity, and of people loved and admired, family or friends for some of us, heroes for many of us. One of the losses that struck us so deeply this year was the loss of trust we Americans now have in each other. Seems like that might be something to work on in the coming year.

But the contrast to the loss is the promise of gaining something in a New Year, something that makes us better, to each other certainly, to ourselves perhaps. Whatever the promise, we hope you achieve it in 2014. Happy New Year.
