Making healthy food available for people who need help affording it, especially children, is going to require a broad and determined commitment. There is certainly a role for city government in this effort and we are pleased it is stepping up early and significantly.

The Madison food policy council has announced applications are being accepted for the inaugural SEED Grant cycle. $50,000 in grant funds will be given out for proposals from organizations, groups or agencies to improve the local food system. The maximum of any one grant is limited to $10,000. We like the breadth of reach this will encourage.

The grants are a direct response to United Way of Dane County, Community Action Coalition and Goodman Foundation supported Healthy Food for All Children 10 year action plan. The United Way website has the plan and a list of short term policies and actions grant applicants should address. Applications are available on the city of Madison’s website slash mayor, slash priorities/ slash food. We encourage applications and action.
