Education Over Legislation

For the life of us we can’t understand why the state legislature wants to stick its nose into the debate over school mascots. What’s the point?

First of all is seems to us lawmakers have better things to do. Job creation comes to mind. Or even redistricting reform. Second, this is a complex and very sensitive issue, exactly the kind of thing most of our current crop of elected officials are not especially good at.

We’ve struggled with this issue as en editorial board…perhaps ten years ago deciding it was possible to have an ethnic mascot or nickname that was respectful and honorable. The vast majority, and perhaps all still in existence are not. But this is about education. And if DPI and schools want to hash out whether or not a mascot or nickname is harmful or hurtful and should be changed let them do so without interference from state legislators.
