WISC EDITORIAL AGENDA 2013 – OUR GOVERNMENT

01/16/13

Like Our Climate and Our Schools, Our Government is a big target and so in need of reform to rebuild trust and credibility that over the years we’ve often not known where to start. But for the purposes of the 2013 editorial agenda we know exactly where to start – redistricting reform.

In a classic case of putting a fox in change of the hen house, allowing state lawmakers to draw the boundaries for the districts they represent makes no sense. It did when legislators were more concerned about representative democracy than money and re-election, but those days are long gone. Today’s politicians will do anything to get re-elected, including redrawing district boundaries every ten years in ways that damage the democratic process.

Their next chance is 2020, so now is the time to change to a new way of redistricting. There are plenty of good examples to choose from. But is has to happen now, this year. We intend to remind them of that all year. Tomorrow, our agenda rollout continues with Our Region.

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
