Take a closer look at casino proposals

Gambling in Wisconsin has had a tough go the last few months.

First there was a Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance report suggesting the state lottery was bumping up against not being able to support itself.  Now the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute has produced a study that questions whether new tribal casinos will increase state revenues.

Gambling is not going away anytime soon, even if more folks are either recognizing the long odds or simply running out of discretionary dollars. But it bears notice when discussion turns to putting more state money or approval into gaming.

If it was just state revenues with the casinos we might think differently. After all they receive benefits from the tribes that run them, and that’s a good thing.

All four proposals for new casinos have their pluses for the communities involved. But the WPRI study says new casinos will simply poach customers and revenue from existing casinos. And that’s not good.

It’s something to think about. And the governor will have to.
