GILDA’S…AGAIN!

01/23/13

Gilda’s Club is, once again, Gilda’s Club. After a well-intentioned and understandable – but poorly received – public name change, the Madison chapter of the Cancer Support Community has changed back, once again connecting to the late, beloved actor Gilda Radner.

We supported the name change because we believed it would help with recognition and outreach and accessibility. But really, the name is the least relevant part of what this organization does. By any name, Cancer Support Community and Gilda’s Club offer invaluable resources to cancer patients and those close to them to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.

So we support this name change as well, back to Gilda’s Club. Whatever helps folks with cancer feel cared for and supported is ok with us. The good work will continue here in Madison and soon beyond and that’s what really matters.

  • PHOTOS: Madison store helps collect hundreds of Teddy bears for police

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
