Madison police report that theft from vehicles has continued to be a frequent offense, especially in the West District, this year.
More than 300 thefts from motor vehicles have been reported in the West District so far this year, officials said.
Since it is so difficult to investigate thefts from vehicles after they happen, police recommend a couple of tips to avoid being a victim.
- Always lock your vehicle when you’re not in it
- Avoid leaving money or valuable items in your vehicle, if you must leave them in your vehicle, be sure they aren’t visible
- Many thefts from vehicles are taking place out of private residential garages, so keep your vehicles locked while in your garage and keep your garage doors closed
West District officers will be focusing on the theft from vehicle problem during the month of October, according to a release.
Officials said following the steps listed will reduce the chances of being victimized.
