TOWN OF MIDDLETON, Wis. -

A crash between a motorcycle and a deer late Sunday night has left a Middleton man in critical condition, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Department.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 14, just east of Willow Road in the Town of Middleton.

According to sheriff's department, a motorcycle ridden by David Howes, 48, of Middleton was going westbound when it hit the deer. Howes, the lone occupant of the motorcycle lost control of the bike and crashed, according to the sheriff's department. Deputies said Howes was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Howes was taken to UW Hospital and admitted with critical injuries. Deputies also charged him with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated - fourth offense after their investigation indicated Howes had been drinking before the crash.

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
