MADISON, Wis. -

A UW-Madison student was treated for exposure to cold after he was found safe in Lake Mendota.

Around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, a University of Wisconsin-Madison police officer on foot patrol noticed a pile of clothes and personal belongings on Alumni Pier, near the Memorial Union, according to a UW-Madison police release.

Witnesses nearby told the officer a man had jumped into Lake Mendota about 40 minutes prior, with intentions of swimming across the lake. The swimmer hadn’t been seen since.

Shortly after the Madison Fire Department's water rescue team responded, the man swam back to the pier. He told authorities he had decided a swim across the lake was a bad idea.

The 22-year-old UW-Madison student was taken to a local hospital and treated for hypothermia, police said.

The UW-Madison Police Department asked students and visitors to swim in designated areas during designated hours.

Last week, Richard De La Cruz, also a UW-Madison student, drowned while swimming in Lake Mendota.
