ONALASKA, Wis. -

A high school student who wrapped up 24-hours of bell ringing said she quadrupled her original money-raising goal.

The seconds were counted down as West Salem senior Anna Lattos finished her marathon bell ringing session at Festival Foods in Onalaska at 10 a.m. Friday.

She started ringing bells at her Salvation Army red kettle Thursday morning. The fundraiser was part of Lattos' senior exit project.

"I didn't want to just do the bell ringing,” Lattos said. “I also wanted to volunteer to get to know the people and what is happening. I go there twice a week to serve a meal, and I also talk with the people at the Salvation Army to understand their situation because not everyone is the same."

The generosity of those that donated brought Lattos to tears.

"I am so happy how many people donated," Lattos said. "I mean, it's just amazing how many people came out to support me. People came in and dropped in $100 and that happened a lot ... it just amazes me how wonderful our community is."

Lattos set out to raise $1,000 and ended up collecting more than $4,000.

Thrive Health Center said it would match the first $1,000 dropped into the kettle.

The Salvation Army hopes to raise $650,000 by the end of January. To volunteer to be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, sign up at the organization’s website, www.bells2ring.org.
