BOSCOBEL, Wis. -

Heavy rains are wreaking havoc across Grant County, where damage is widespread and exceeding $5 million.

The damage estimates are the latest numbers compiled by staff at the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center.

Across the county, 640 homes have some type of flood damage; the damage is considered major in 20 of those homes.

The community of Boscobel was the hardest hit in Grant County. At least 13 inches of rain has fallen on the city alone, according to the National Weather Service.

Grant County Emergency Management leaders said they are in the process of applying for several disaster-assistance programs. Residents who have damage are urged to report it by calling 608-723-7171.

The state's Department of Health Services also has staff in the area assisting with damage assessments. The agency is also providing 100 well-water bacteria-test kits to the Grant County Public Health Department.

Several roads remained closed throughout the county due to washouts and standing water.

The closures include several county highways:

  • County Highway C, from Hwy. 18 to Hwy. 133.
  • County Highway G, between Studnicka Road and Ridge Road in Muscoda Township.
  • County Highway M, from County T to County G. Open for emergency traffic only, down to one lane.
  • County Highway S, passable only to County Highway M.
