MONROE, Wis. -

A bow hunter from Monroe shot a trophy buck Sunday night, only to have the deer’s head stolen overnight.

Jameson Smith told News 3 the deer he shot Sunday afternoon was the first big buck he’s shot in 17 years of hunting. He said the deer was shot at about 5:30 p.m. on land 6 miles south of Monroe. The deer was found at about 8 p.m.

Smith said he put the deer in the bed of his pickup truck and was going to register it, butcher it, and take it to the taxidermist on Monday.

He said he woke Monday morning before 6 a.m. and found that someone had sawed off the deer’s head.

“He was one of the bucks we were after and 5:30 last night he came out. I made a perfect shot on him, got him and everything. I was on top of the world and that all came crashing down this morning," said Smith.

Smith said he has talked to the Department of Natural Resources, the Green County Sheriff’s Office and has put pictures on social media hoping to find the deer head.

The DNR said it is involved in the case.
