Forum scheduled for next Memorial Union Reinvestment phase

Published On: Sep 03 2013 08:54:53 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

A forum to discuss the next phase of the Memorial Union Reinvestment project will be held to elicit feedback and impressions, according to a release.

The meeting will be 6 p.m. Monday in Memorial Union, according to the release. Check “Today in the Union” for exact location of meeting.

Architects will present preliminary floor plans, site plans and design ideas to students, faculty, staff and Union members as well as the public, officials said. Attendees are encouraged to visit stations focusing on concepts for the Terrace, first floor dining, two-story coffee shop and general floor plans, then comment on their impressions.

“These are all ideas and not set concepts, so we welcome any comments or reactions,” Katie Cary, MUR student project manager, said in the release. “There will be no major changes to the footprint of the building, at least not above ground.”

Cary said the Main Lounge, Great Hall, Tripp Commons and Der Rathskeller’s seating area will only see restoration, not major renovation.

MUR staff has been revising the designs since June and the forum was planned to get input from the public, including students, after ideas were generated but before majors decisions were made, officials said.

Information from the public forum will be used to guide further planning, according to the release.

The architects will craft a final design proposal, which will be reviewed by the Union’s Design Committee, officials said. The Design Committee will make recommendations to the Union Council. The final plan will be submitted to the Board of Regents, the campus Design Review Board, Joint Southeast Campus Committee, the Wisconsin Historical Society and the State Building Commission.

Officials said they hope to get approval from all the groups in the early spring of 2014.

The initial phase of construction renovating the west wing, including Hoofers and the Union Theater, will wrap up in fall of 2014, according to the release. The Union Theater will reopen to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
