PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. -

Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer says a fire has destroyed the Slumberland Furniture store.

Hemmer said crews had the fire contained shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, but the local department will stay on the scene likely all night.

The Prairie du Chien Fire Department said about a 100 firefighters were on the scene.

Hemmer said the fire was in a strip mall. He said there is smoke damage to the connecting gas company, laundromat, vacant grocery store and discount store.

Hemmer said there is a voluntary evacuation on Blackhawk Avenue and the high school is open for evacuees, but the mayor wasn't sure if anyone has actually left their homes.
