MADISON, Wis. -

More than two dozen Madison police officers were needed to break up a series of fights in the parking lot of Mansfield Stadium following the football game between Madison Memorial and Madison West Thursday night.

Police said a fight that broke out on the field during the game came ahead of fights outside the stadium later.

Police said when they tried to detain a 13-year-old girl who was involved in the melee, her family members tried to stop the officers, which led to four other people receiving citations.

Jasmine Williams, 18, was cited and released on suspicion of disorderly conduct. Three other juveniles also received disorderly conduct charges, and one also was charged with resisting an officer.

Police said there were about 200 people congregated in the parking lot when the fights started to break out.

Earlier in the evening, a Madison police officer was punched three times in the head by a 15-year-old Verona student, according to police. The officer went into a bathroom stall to investigate a complaint that someone was smoking marijuana.

The officer said a group of teens fled and the 15-year-old attacked the officer while being detained. She was taken to the juvenile reception center on suspicion of battery to a police officer and obstructing.

A 16-year-old student from Verona was caught and cited on suspicion of obstructing.

Madison school officials said they would be reviewing video from the incidents to determine if any students should receive penalties.
