Expansion to extend landfill's life 30 years

A $20 million expansion of the Rodefeld landfill will extend the life of the landfill by 30 years, according to a release from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi.

The landfill was projected to reach capacity later this year.

Parisi’s office said expansion will be less expensive than creating a new landfill or shipping waste to other counties. It would also save farmland.

The expansion would allow the county to nearly double its production of renewable electricity from decaying trash, according to Parisi. The landfill currently generates $3.3 million in electricity annually, enough to power 4,000 homes.

Costs to the city of Madison will increase by $3 per ton in July and another $2 per ton next year, under the expansion agreement. Parisi said the fees are still less than what it would cost to ship the waste to nearby counties.

Construction of the expansion is expected to start this summer. The new expanded landfill would then open by fall.

Rodefeld Landfill is at 7102 U.S. Highway 12 & 18, which is in Madison and partially in the town of Cottage Grove.
