MADISON, Wis. -

A fire caused approximately $60,000 in damage to a downtown home Tuesday afternoon, according to a release.

Crews responded to the two-story house in the 400 block of Mifflin Street around 3:10 p.m., officials said. Crews observed smoke coming from the roof when they arrived and aggressively attacked the interior to get the fire under control a couple minutes later.

Crews fought much of the fire from the top of the roof by cutting ventilation holes in the roof to let heat and smoke out of the attic space, as well as to remove additional burning materials in the roof, according to the release.

Six people have been displaced, but only one was home at the time of the fire, officials said. The resident said he smelled smoke, and when he went outside a passerby was already calling 911.

Investigators said the fire was caused by electrical problems.

No injuries were reported at the scene.

Crews responded to a second fire caused by electrical problems around 9:30 Tuesday night at The Spot restaurant at 827 E. Johnson St., according to the release. The fire was called in by employees who said they were cleaning the stove when they smelled smoke, but could not find the source.

Firefighters found a fire in the wall behind the drywall, officials said. There was heavy charring of the studs in the wall and the interior wood wall, and some wiring melted.

According to the release, the fire caused about $15,000 in damage.
