DNR sets up wildfire hotline for residents

Published On: May 16 2013 07:05:14 AM CDT
TOWN OF GORDON, Wis. -

Residents and owners of vacation properties potentially affected by the northwestern Wisconsin wildfire now have a hotline to call to check on their properties.

The wildfire that started Tuesday afternoon has consumed about 8,700 acres in Douglas and Bayfield County. Department of Natural Resources spokesman Robert Manwell says firefighters have largely stopped the spread of the fire.

At least 60 people have evacuated their homes and 47 structures were destroyed, including 17 homes.

Manwell says DNR officials will also be escorting some people back to their properties to retrieve pets and supplies if the area is safe. He says the first group was expected to return later Wednesday afternoon.
