A contractor is facing charges in Dane, Brown and Outagamie counties on accusations he failed to repair roofs he was contracted to repair.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice said the owner of Midwest Roofing Corporation, Daniel Steiner, is charged with four counts of theft by contractor. The company in question is not Midwest Roofing & Construction, LLC out of Dodgeville.
A complaint states Steiner contracted with homeowners in 2011 to repair hail damaged roofs, took their payments and didn’t repair the roofs.
The complaint details the cases of two Dane County residents who told authorities they paid Steiner to work on their homes, but the projects weren’t completed. Steiner told one of the residents that his company had gone bankrupt.
The investigation began after a number of consumers complained to Wisconsin's Better Business Bureau. Kimberly Hazen, the director of the southwest chapter of the BBB, said there's vindication with the attorney general formally pressing charges against Steiner.
"This feels like a victory for us, to have something like this come to fruition," she said. "One (consumer) alleged he actually ripped off all the aluminum siding from the house, put insulation on half of the house, had taken $7,800 as a payment and then never returned phone calls, never came back. So, the house is completely torn apart, and he didn't finish the job."
Other complaints to the BBB are on their website.
