Common core education standards discussed

Critics of national education standards adopted three years ago in Wisconsin have packed an informational hearing to examine the issue.

Wisconsin is one of 45 states that have adopted the voluntary standards that create basic requirements for math and English language arts.

Criticism of the standards has been growing in other states, some of which are now looking to undo them. Many are concerned about a loss of local control.

There has been no serious push in Wisconsin to reverse course, but increasing concerns led to Wednesday's joint hearing before the state Senate and Assembly education committees.

This year Gov. Scott Walker included money in his budget to move ahead with new tests designed to measure how well students are meeting what is being taught.
