Commission allows tribe to keep grant

Published On: May 22 2013 03:29:33 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

The vice chairman of the state Building Commission has decided to let a Wisconsin Chippewa tribe keep a $250,000 grant to help build a cultural center.

Rep. Dean Kaufert, a Neenah Republican, wanted to rescind the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's grant after the state's Chippewa bands raised walleye spearfishing goals by 5,300 fish. That forced the Department of Natural Resources to impose a one-walleye limit on nearly 200 northern Wisconsin lakes.

Kaufert complained the limit would devastate north woods tourism and proposed taking away the Lac du Flambeau's grant as payback.

He pulled back on Thursday, though, saying he expects the DNR will raise bag limits after the cold spring reduced the spearing take. He also pointed to a new state plan to boost walleye production.

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
