City of Beloit recovering after heavy rains caused flooding

Published On: Jun 25 2013 08:00:45 PM CDT   Updated On: Jun 25 2013 08:33:56 PM CDT
BELOIT, Wis. -

After getting pounded with wind and rain, small puddles and clumps of dirt are all that remain on Fourth Street in Beloit.

Ron Lee said high water made it difficult to get to his parts shop CBL Tools Tuesday morning.

"The street was flooded with all kinds of trucks and cars going by. There was a car way up there that was stalled," said Lee.

Beloit's Operations Supervisor Bruce Slagoski said several streets were temporarily closed, including a portion of 4th Street.

"All of our major streets were flooded by a significant amount," said Slagoski.

City crews spent the day putting up barricades and picking up tree limbs.

"The east side, the water was so intense from the storms it was blowing off manhole covers," said Slagoski. He said when Beloit police weren't helping cars navigate through flood waters, they were assisting public works crews picking up tree limbs to help keep traffic moving safely.

Leeson Park doesn't have a swimming pool, but Mother Nature gave it one.

Parks Director Brian Ramsey estimated about 5 percent of the more than 30-acre park is underwater.

"There are 39 parks in the City of Beloit. This is the only park besides the golf course that was impacted by the rain."

Part of the roadway at Leeson Park is closed.

Ramsey said it's been at least five years since the park has experienced this level of flooding. He said the park's position on two creeks is partly to blame.

"We'll have to monitor the activity of the creek and see if it rises or falls, then appropriately respond to it as we need to,” said Ramsey.

Rock County’s emergency management team is monitoring flooding in Clinton and Avon townships. It's also closed South Carvers Road between East Creek Road to Larsen Road indefinitely.
