A 44-year old man was questioned after weapons screeners at the Dane County Courthouse detected a gun in the man's backpack.

According to a release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office, the man arrived at the courthouse for traffic court along with his two children. He voluntarily allowed his backpack to be screened at the courthouse entrance.

The screener detected a gun-shaped item in the backpack and took possession of it. As a matter of procedure, weapons screener alerted Dane County Sheriff's Deputies assigned to the Bailiff's Office.

A detective interviewed the man who said he knew it was illegal to bring a weapon into the courthouse, but said he forgot it was in his bag, according to the release.

The man has a valid conceal and carry permit. He was released, and the incident is being reviewed by the district attorney.
