Army phasing out ROTC program at UW-L

LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The United States Army is phasing out its Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse after 40 years of service.

UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow sent out an email Thursday afternoon to staff and students and the media.  The program will end after the 2014-15 academic year.

Gow said he received a letter from Thomas R. Lamont, the Assistant Secretary of the Army. Lamont wrote, "The Army arrived at this difficult decision after careful consideration of how best to accomplish its mission with a reduction of resources.”

The ROTC Eagle Battalion has been a program at UW-L for more than 40 years and “has been an important and visible presence on our campus,” Gow said.

Gow said UW-L can be “very proud of its rich ROTC tradition” and thanks Battalion Commander LTC James Hill and all the faculty, staff and Cadets of Eagle Battalion “for the tremendous honor their program has brought to our university.”

Gow said the university will contact Congressman Ron Kind and Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson to see if there are any options for avoiding the planned closure.
