MADISON, Wis. -

Two residents are without an apartment after a fire in a two-story apartment building early Saturday morning, officials said.

Officials responded to reports of a fire around 3:18 a.m. Saturday in an apartment building at 15 South Charter St., according to a release.

Smoke alarms did sound and the two-story apartment building was evacuated when crews arrived, officials said.

Smoke was seen coming from the second floor towards the back of the building, according to the release. Firefighters found flames reaching some cabinets in a common kitchen area and the fire was extinguished by 3:30 a.m.

The first floor sustained light smoke damage and residents were allowed back in one hour after the fire was extinguished, officials said. The second floor had heavier smoke damage, and fire damage was confined to the area around the kitchen at one end of the building.
