Cellphone Customers Jump Companies

DARLINGTON, Wis. -

Some Lafayette County residents say they've received cellphone text alerts telling them their debit card has been deactivated, and the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is calling the messages a scam.

The text message asks the customer to call First National Bank. When the customer calls the number, they're given they're asked by an automated message to enter their 16-digit card number.

Investigators said no one should respond to the message, and it's unlikely a financial institution would contact customers via text message with this type of request.

Legitimate financial companies and government agencies won't contact you to ask for your personal information, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators said they're getting daily reports from residents who said they've been contacted by potential financial scammers.
