PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. -

A man suspected of impersonating a reporter and calling female high school athletes, including members of the Verona High School golf team, appeared in court for a plea hearing Tuesday.

Gary Medrow, 68, of Greenfield, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two counts of unlawful use of a phone and two counts of disorderly conduct.

A new hearing was scheduled for Jan. 17.

Medrow was detained Nov. 17 after an arrest warrant was issued in Ozaukee County, according to Cedarburg police.

Medrow is believed to have contacted athletes in Mequon, Cedarburg, Hartland, Franklin and Verona saying he was a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

A Cedarburg police officer worked with other agencies dealing with similar cases. He said in all cases the imposter reporter asked the girls to pose on each other's shoulders.

Verona police said five members of the golf team were contacted by the imposter reporter, but meetings with the athletes were never scheduled.

Medrow has been convicted in multiple cases for unlawful use of a phone and impersonating a police officer, according to court records. Those include a 1997 case in Dane County in which he was charged with impersonating a police officer and unlawful use of a telephone.

Biliskov said Medrow has been impersonating people, like police officers, since the late 70s.
