Students build car that gets 353 MPG

 A group of junior high school students from Missouri have built a car that gets a whopping 353 miles per gallon.

Under the guidance of instructor Marcus Reynolds, the seventh and eighth grade students from Aurora Junior High School used their creation to win this year's Missouri SuperMileage Challenge, beating out teams of older high school students, Fox News reported.

"I'm pretty proud of them, yeah," Reynolds told ABC News. "They're sitting on Cloud 9 right now."

The single-seat car weighs about 100 pounds and is powered by a 1.3 hp 35 cc Robin/Subaru motor that is typically used on motorized bicycles, according to Fox News.

It has has three small bicycle wheels and starts with a pull cord. A steering column turns the two front wheels.

The car was tested over 10 laps around a .48 mile-long highway patrol training track with several elevation changes and a 180 degree hairpin turn. The students used the "pulse and glide" method for fuel efficient driving, which involves short bursts of acceleration followed by long periods of coasting, Fox News reported.

Many of the students worked on the car after school, on snow days and even on Saturdays. They even beat the state record previously held by the Aurora High School team by more than 30 mpg, Springfield, Mo., TV station KYTV reported.
