Former Madison talker John "Sly" Sylvester plans to return to radio in Monroe.

Surrounded by liberal supporters in the Capitol Building Monday, Sylvester announced he will host an afternoon drive talk show on 93.7 WEKZ-FM starting Feb. 4. His show will air from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays.

Sylvester was among those laid off in November 2012 when 1670 WTDY-AM and 106.7 WTDY-FM switched to a temporary Christmas music format and later became a sports talk station.

Owner of WEKZ-FM, Scott Thompson released a statement about Sly's hiring.

"Radio is theatre of the mind. Sly is radio's equivalent to a Broadway Actor. When tuned in, listeners have a front row seat," said Thompson.

He told WISC-TV it will be different doing an afternoon show, but he said the wider reach of WEKZ will be worth it.

At the time, Randy Hawke, WTDY's operations manager, said WTDY consistently came in third in the ratings among Madison talk stations.
