School officials speak out against vouchers

Published On: Mar 19 2013 04:21:32 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

Leaders in public school districts that would have to offer taxpayer funded vouchers to students wishing to attend private schools are speaking out against Gov. Scott Walker's plan.

Officials from the Madison, Kenosha, Superior and West Allis-West Milwaukee school districts joined together Tuesday to argue against Walker's expansion plan that's included in his budget.

They spoke during a conference call organized by voucher opponent, Democratic state Rep. Sondy Pope.

Walker wants to allow vouchers in any district with at least 4,000 students that has two or more schools receiving a D or F on statewide report cards.

The school officials said the report cards were never intended to be used as a trigger for the voucher program.

Republicans who control the state Senate have said Walker's plan needs to change.
