BELOIT, Wis. -

Beloit residents will get a chance Thursday to comment on the environmental impact of the proposed Ho-Chunk Nation Casino in Beloit.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is hosting a public hearing at 6 p.m. at Aldrich Middle School, 1859 Northgate Dr.

The federal bureau is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement for the casino project and is accepting comments until Dec. 26.

According to the Federal Register, the BIA will analyze, “land resources, water resources, air quality, noise, biological resources, cultural resources, resource use patterns, traffic and transportation, public health/environmental hazards, public services and utilities, socioeconomics, environmental justice, and visual resources/aesthetics.”

The casino plan includes a 700,000-square foot facility with a theater, a 300-room hotel and a class three casino with upward of 2,200 slot machines and 50 table games.

Tribal leaders said the $150 million to $200 million project could create as many as 2,000 jobs and provide a boost to the area's economy.

The casino idea has been floated for more than a decade. In a 1999 referendum, 61 percent of Beloit voters approved implementation of a casino project. But the project ran into roadblocks in Washington, D.C.
