Police arrest suspect in campus bicycle thefts

Published On: Nov 28 2012 02:22:05 PM CST

MADISON, Wis. -

University of Wisconsin-Madison police said they have arrested a suspect in connection with bicycle thefts from campus.

Police said they arrested Ryan J. Loughrin, of Madison, on Tuesday. He was booked into the Dane County Jail on suspicion of theft, and charges are being requested from the Dane County District Attorney's Office.

Loughrin admitted to investigators that he had stolen bicycles from the UW-Madison campus and that he focused on bicycles that were secured with cable locks, according to a UW-Madison Police Department news release.

Police said Loughrin sold the stolen bicycles on Craigslist.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.

Police are reminding the community to use proper crime prevention techniques when securing valuables.

"If you have a bicycle, make sure you lock it using a quality 'U-Lock' style lock. Place the lock on the bicycle securing the front wheel and the frame of the bicycle to an approved bike rack," said Sgt. Aaron Chapin, of the UW-Madison Police Department, in the news release.

Police said thieves frequently use Craigslist and other Internet sites to sell their stolen items.

If people choose to purchase an item from Craigslist, they should make sure to obtain the serial number from the seller along with a contract from the seller to help protect themselves from fraud, police said.
