MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police said Woodman's Food Market employees and shoppers were able to surround a disturbed man and keep him at bay while police were called to the grocery store Thursday night following several bizarre attacks.

Police said the 61-year-old man was shopping at Woodman's at 3817 Milwaukee St. when he became irate and started randomly attacking people about 7:30 p.m.

Police said the man back-handed a 50-year-old customer in the face while in the checkout line, slapped an employee numerous times, attempted to enter an employee-only area, and hit another person with a carton of cigarettes.

A group of people quickly surrounded the man, making sure he hit no one else, and avoided his attacks until police arrived, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said an officer had to use an electronic control device to subdue the man.

According to police, the man said, "That was kind of fun," as officers removed the ECD probes.

The man was taken to a hospital for observation, police said.
