A Sun Prairie man died after what Madison police describe as a freak accident in the parking lot of a Madison business Wednesday.

A witness told police the 58-year-old man was running alongside his van as it rolled into a parking lot at 5511 Odana Rd. before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The witness said as the man was trying to regain control of the van he became entangled between the van’s frame and the pavement. The van came to a stop on top of the man.

Police said they’re not sure how he got outside the vehicle.

The man was able to talk to first responders, but he stopped breathing shortly after rescue personnel were able to lift the van off him.

He was transported to a hospital where he died.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
