MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man who was awake early Tuesday morning discovered an intruder in his home on the city's south side.

Police said the 39-year-old man heard his unlocked front door open about 1:22 a.m. and yelled out, "Hello?"

The intruder fled from the home in the 900 block of Lorena Parkway, police said.

The homeowner pursued him outside for a short distance, and soon realized someone had also rifled through the center console of his unlocked SUV, which was parked outside of his home, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Officers followed tracks in the snow but were unable to find the intruder.

Police said the intruder was described as a man of average height, weighing 200 to 225 pounds and wearing a gray and white hat, a dark coat with a hood and jeans.

The victim said he had not locked his front door since he had not yet gone to bed, according to the incident report.

Madison police said they advise residents to keep vehicles and residences locked at all times.
