SAUK PRAIRIE, Wis. -

Authorities in Sauk County have found a fugitive who they say cut off his GPS monitoring bracelet and went missing. Four schools had their external doors locked Friday during the search, according to police.

The Sauk Prairie Police Department was notified at 8:40 p.m. Thursday that monitoring of Stephan Christian, 58, of Madison, showed he was at a hardware store in the village of Sauk Prairie for an extended period of time. The Wisconsin Division of Probation and Parole believed Christian's bracelet had been cut off.

Police found the hardware store was closed, contacted the business's keyholder and found Christian's ankle bracelet in the store.

Christian was convicted in 1992 of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

He was found Friday afternoon, according to Sauk Prairie police.
