Forecasters issue flood watch for southern Wis.

MADISON, Wis. -

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch this week as a result of a combination of recent rain and melting snow. Additional precipitation expected this week may raise area rivers and cause creeks and drainage areas to flood.

The flood watch covers the southern third of the state, including the WISC-TV viewing area. It will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning.

Rainfall is expected to total 2-3 inches, causing several rivers to reach a minor to moderate flood stage. Low-lying roads may also be affected by high water and flooding.

Temperatures will gradually turn colder this week with highs reaching the upper 40s on Tuesday, the lower 40s on Wednesday, and temperatures falling from around 40 on Thursday.  Showers will diminish Friday with highs in the lower 40s.  With colder temperatures by later in the week, rain may be mixed with snow or freezing rain at times from Wednesday night through Friday.

Saturday will dry out as high pressure builds across the region. Skies should be partly sunny with continued chilly temperatures in the 40s.  Another chance for rain will arrive late Saturday night and Sunday.  Sunday's highs should be in the lower 50s.
