MADISON, Wis. -

Madison firefighters rescued three children trapped on the roof of their burning home Wednesday night.

Crews were called about 7:15 p.m. to a house fire at 914 Chapel Hill Road, just off Schroeder Road on the city's west side. When they arrived, they found three children on the garage roof screaming and heavy smoke coming from the building. Flames were visible from the back side of the duplex, according to fire officials.

Firefighters helped the children to the ground and rescued a dog from the home. The fire was extinguished within 12 minutes.

The fire caused extensive damage to the first floor and moderate smoke damage to the second floor. 910 Chapel Hill Road sustained smoke damage. A family of two and family of four were displaced, according to fire officials.

Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen and the cause is under investigation. The children said smoke alarms alerted them of the fire.
