ELKHORN, Wis. -

A Walworth County sheriff's deputy acted in self-defense when he shot a Janesville teen at a hospital in January, according to the Walworth County district attorney.

DA Daniel Necci wrote in a letter released Friday that the evidence from the Jan. 21 incident shows Deputy Richard Lagle was attempting to prevent himself or others from being attacked with potentially deadly force when he shot 18-year-old Alfredo Emilio Villarreal.

Lagle told investigators he was guarding Villarreal at Lakeland Medical Center as Villarreal was undergoing tests for a personal medical issue. He said Villarreal tried to escape.

The deputy was punched and kicked multiple times and called for assistance, according to investigators.

Lagle then used a Taser, which didn't stop Villarreal, according to investigators. Deputies said Villarreal used a chair to try to break out the window in his room, and when that failed, he tried to strike the deputy over the head with the chair.

Investigators said the deputy then shot Villarreal and he died at the scene.

Villarreal was in the Walworth County Jail on a probation hold.

Waukesha County detectives assisted in the shooting investigation.
