Deer test positive for CWD in Portage, Juneau counties

Published On: Jan 02 2013 04:32:20 PM CST

MADISON, Wis. -

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said two deer have testified positive for chronic wasting disease -- one each in Portage and Juneau counties.

It's the first time wild deer have tested positive for the disease in both counties.

DNR regional wildlife program manager Kris Belling said neither of the positive cases was unexpected. Juneau County is near the CWD management zone boundary, and the DNR has been sampling in Portage County for 10 years after the disease was discovered on a former game farm.

Gun hunters harvested the two deer on Nov. 18. The sampling results do not change the remaining days of the late archery hunting season, nor do they change the current management zone boundary.

CWD is a mad-cow-like brain disease that can be fatal to deer.

  • PHOTOS: Madison store helps collect hundreds of Teddy bears for police

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
